LONGBOW WOOD SELECTION GALERIE

Use this site to review and select wood that you want in your bow. Each  species has a different Specific Gravity (SG.) number. The number indicates the wood's density. A piece of Balsa wood at SG.14 - .18 floats high and dry on water where a piece of Cocobolo at SG.114 will sink! Denser wood like Bamboo and Bubinga can store more energy and can release the energy faster than limp wood like Willow ( not William:)

The letters EM stand for Elastic Modulus which is an important number as well wood that is dense and brittle, with low EM value is not well suited for Limb wood because it may not be able to expand on the back side of the bow. Bubinga, Bamboo, Osage Orange, and Hickory with high EM values are favorites for limb core wood.

Some species like Ebony and Cocobolo rocks in handle riser sections where it is encapsulated and can provide much energy in a short confined space and impart this energy into the limbs. A LOT of engergy in a bow comes from the fades in the handle / riser section of the bow.

Choose several hopefuls for each bow part. Some wood that is rare may not be readily available. Balance the colors to your favorite way. We will do our best to find and match the wood you want to your life time friend - your longbow.
